HOMELEARNING

HOME LEARNING IN ROOM 8 At Wainuiomata Primary School we have an expectation that each child will complete a weekly Home Learning programme. We believe that Home Learning is an important part of your child’s learning as it teaches time management and helps to build on the skills that are taught in the classroom. I feel taking responsibility for themselves is a big part of being a Senior Student, and having to complete and remember to 'hand in' their Home Learning is a way I can encourage this. Home Learning will generally come home each Friday and is due in on the following Thursday. It will consist of spelling lists, home reading, written sentences, basic facts and a variety of fun activities. In Room 8 there will be a variety of fun rewards for those children who consistently remember to bring their completed Home Learning on Thursdays. Children who do not complete their Home Learning will be required to finish it during Golden Time, Lunch Time or before school. HOME LEARNING REQUIREMENTS Spelling Each Friday your child will have 10 words to learn. The spelling words will usually come from the Essential Spelling Lists and your child’s words will be chosen from their current level. The words might seem a little easy at first but they are being tested on every word in their level and words will gradually get harder throughout the year as they move up the lists. Suggestions for learning these words are glued into your child’s home Learning book. Please fill out the spelling section in your child’s Home Learning sheet every night. Home Reading Every night your child is expected to read a book for 15 minutes. These books are chosen either by your child from their class book box, school library or books you have selected from the local library. Please fill out the Reading section in your child’s Home Learning sheet every night. To help protect the school’s library books it is important that your child uses the bag their stationary came in, a plastic bag or something similar. Written Spelling Sentences Children need to choose 5 of their spelling words and write a sentence with each word, using pencil. The spelling words that they choose to write about in each sentence must be underlined with red pen. Sentences need to make sense, have full stops, correct spelling and capital letters. Spelling Sentences should also be ruled off in red pen. If you don't have a red pen and ruler at home, these things can be done before school. Basic Facts Practice Complete the Basic Facts sheet provided for the week. Answers can normally be completed on the sheet. Fun Activities Each week I will set a fun/crazy/alternative task for your child to complete at home. These tasks are meant to be hands-on and hopefully encourage life skills. From time to time each activity may be repeated. I do appreciate that your lives and the lives of your children are often busy, which is why it is important to make Home Learning a regular part of your child’s after school routine. Should you feel that your child requires extension in the Home Learning area and you are able to support that, please let me know and I will endeavour to make additional arrangements. If each and every section of the weekly tick sheet is signed then I will assume you are happy with the level of work completed and there will be no negative consequences. Unsigned sections tell me that you are not happy with the quality of work or the work wasn't completed. If you have any concerns about Room 8’s Home Learning programme please feel free to email or come in and see me. Thank you for your support. It is greatly appreciated. Martin Cooper, Room 8 Teacher
